Chinese New Year in Bali

Each year late January to mid-February Chinese New Year takes place in Bali. Bali’s culture is influenced by China and Balinese of Chinese descent. Legend tells that Chinese coins, called Kepeng were used in Bali from the 7th century onwards and that the traditional Barong is to be derived from the Chinese dragon. King Jayapangus of northern Bali married a Chinese princess during the 11th century. They named their kingdom Balingkang or Bali Kang. A lot of Balinese temples architecture points to distinct Chinese styles and become truly festive during the Chinese New Year celebrations.
